PHOEBUS HIGH ATHLETE KILLED IN ROBBERY TRY

A star athlete at Phoebus High School died Friday, about 12 hours after being shot in what police said was a robbery attempt.

Joemel Dennis, 16, of Hampton, was shot at 11:45 p.m. Thursday after being approached near his home by two teenagers who demanded money, authorities said. Dennis died Friday morning at Sentara Hampton General Hospital.

A rising senior, Dennis was a point guard on the Phoebus basketball team and the starting quarterback on the football team.
