A Newport News man who rescued an infant from a burning apartment last year was proclaimed a hero this week by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission.
Ronald Hardee, 40, was among the 16 people named heroes Thursday when the commission announced its annual awards.
Hardee saved Brandon Johnson from a burning apartment on March 3, 1993.
The awards were announced in Pittsburgh. Other do-gooders receiving them had rescued people from burning homes, attacking dogs and raging rivers. One disarmed a gunman, another swapped himself as a hostage for a mother with children and one man drowned trying to save a girl. by CNB
