Two local educators, John S. Kalocay and Diane Niland Jones, have been named to new positions with Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
On July 1, Kalocay was named chief operations officer by the School Board.
Kalocay has been with the city schools since 1974 when he was a classroom teacher at Old Donation Elementary School. He then became an assistant principal for eight years and at the same time served as a summer school principal for three of those years.
He was named principal of Rosemont Forest Elementary School in 1986, supervising its opening, and most recently was principal of Glenwood Elementary School. There he supervised the opening of what was at that time - 1989 - the largest elementary school in the state. Before coming to Virginia Beach, Kalocay had been a seventh-grade reading teacher in Pennsylvania for two years.
As chief operations officer, Kalocay will be responsible for a variety of operational functions. They include school plant, maintenance, planning and construction, environmental services, transportation and food services.
He will report directly to Deputy Superintendent James Pughsley. According to Pughsley: ``John is highly qualified for this new position. He has garnered extensive experience through the years, in the classroom, as a school administrator, and as a tireless committee member for such wide-ranging projects as the Architectural/Engineering Procurement Committee, the Leadership Academy Advisory Committee, the Safe Schools Task Force and the Employee Representative Meet and Confer Committee for School Bus Drivers and Teachers.''
Kalocay called his new position an exciting challenge.
He holds a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and a master's degree in reading from California State University in California, Pa. His administrative certification is from Old Dominion University, his educational specialist degree is from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and he is currently working toward his doctorate in administration, also at George Washington University.
Active in numerous professional and civic organizations, Kalocay serves on such diverse educational committees as the Customer Service Committee, the Principals' Evaluation Committee Task Force and the Gifted Program Review Committee.
His community involvement includes the Chamber of Commerce Armed Forces Committee, the Optimist Club, the YMCA Board of Directors, Laborfest and Special Olympics.
Honored by the Virginia Jaycees, Kalocay was twice nominated for the Outstanding Young Citizen Award. In addition, he makes numerous presentations to professional groups and speaks at a variety of conferences, locally, regionally and nationally.
Kalocay has resided in Virginia Beach for 19 years. He is married; his wife, Karen, teaches at Tallwood Elementary School. He has a daughter in middle school and a daughter in high school.
Also on Friday, the School Board named Diane Jones special assistant to the deputy superintendent.
She has been with the city schools for 25 years. Most recently she served as the principal at Kempsville Meadows Elementary School for five years. Before that she served as assistant principal at Kingston Elementary for one year, assistant principal at Pembroke Meadows Elementary for four years, as a curriculum assistant for 10 years and as an elementary school teacher for five years.
Jones, too, calls her new assignment an exciting challenge. She said, ``. . Virginia Beach.''
Jones earned her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from High Point University in North Carolina and her master's degree in education from Old Dominion University. She was selected as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1974 and was the National PTA Phoebe Apperson Hearst Outstanding Educator of the Year nominee in 1988.
Married, with two daughters, Jones is a 25-year resident of Virginia Beach. Her older daughter is in high school, while her younger daughter has been part of the special education program since she was 2 years old. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
