The six winners of the May 3 City Council election - four of them Republicans - will be sworn into office Tuesday at City Hall.
Having gained six of the nine council seats, Republicans will be able to set the city's agenda for the first time in decades.
Councilmen-elect John M. de Triquet, a pediatrician and Eastern Virginia Medical School professor, and W. Joe Newman, a financial planner, will be taking the oath of office for the first time. Councilmen Peter P. Duda Jr., a television producer for the Christian Broadcasting Network, Arthur L. Dwyer, an employee of Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, and Alan P. Krasnoff, a chiropractor, will each be returning for a second term.
Current Vice Mayor John W. Butt, owner of Butt Oil Co., will be beginning his fourth term on the council. A new vice mayor will be elected by the council after the new members are seated.
Republicans de Triquet, Duda, Dwyer and Newman will form their majority with current councilmen John E. Allen and Robert T. Nance. Butt will join Mayor William E. Ward as the council's Democrats. Krasnoff describes himself as an independent.
All six councilmen will be serving four-year terms except for Dwyer, who won the special election for the council's two-year seat.
Once the new members are in place, the council will be back at full strength. The traditionally nine-member body has been one person short for two months.
The official ``Oath of Office Ceremony'' will begin at 6:30 p.m. in City Council Chamber.
