LILLIE S. YEATES

Lillie Mae Smith Yeates, 88, formerly of Route 3, Hertford, died Monday, July 4, 1994, in Brian Care Center of Hertford.

A native of Perquimans County, she was the daughter of the late Matthew Spivey Smith and Mollie Garrett Brown Smith and the widow of Joseph Dewey Yeates.

She was a member of Berea Church of Christ, where she was a former pianist; Snow Hill/White Hat Home Demonstration Club; helped organize the Memory Lane Senior Citizens Club; and in 1986 was awarded the Perquimans County Jaycee's Senior Citizen's Award.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mollie Lura Yeates Forehand and Thurman P. ``Pete'' Forehand Jr. of Hampton, Va.; a sister, Edna S. Newbern of Hertford; a brother, Murray S. Smith of Hertford; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mildred Alleene Yeates Thompson, who died in December 1978, and a brother, Roscoe L. Smith.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. in Berea Church of Christ with Dr. Lyndall Stike and the Rev. Gene Boyce officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Swindell Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
