Julia Bristow of Norfolk has been elected the first president of The Butterfly Society of Virginia. She has been the head of the new organization's steering committee for the past two years.

Mark Schneider, horticulturist at the Virginia Zoological Park in Norfolk, was elected vice president. Other officers are Millie Clinkscales, secretary, and Ruth Burch, treasurer.

Directors are Bob Stiffler, Bonnie Denault, Stan Nicolay, Jan Gates and James Pettersen of Norfolk.

The Butterfly Society's mission is education, conservation and volunteer support of butterfly programs. It will sponsor a Butterfly Family Festival Sunday, July 31, at the Virginia Zoological Park.

Virginia Opera has been designated ``official opera company of the Commonwealth of Virginia.'' The designation was approved by the full Senate on March 9. Instrumental in the initiation of this bill was Virginia Opera board member V.M. ``Barney'' Annas.

The bill recognizes Virginia Opera's nineteen years of providing quality opera services statewide that are affordable and accessible to Virginians, reaching more than 205,000 people in 1992-93 season through performances, education and touring programs, and community events. A copy of the resolution will be on display at the Edythe C. and Stanley L. Harrison Opera House.

Mary Jane I. Davis, state historian of the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution, has received the Excellence in Community Service Award from the Old Donation Chapter. She is a past president of the Great Bridge Chapter. CAMPUS NOTES

Michael Gordon Holland has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Longwood College, Farmville.

Heather Holt will depart July 20 for Germany, where she will live with a volunteer host family and attend school for one year. Heather, a student at Norview High School, is a recipient of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program scholarship, administered by Youth for Understanding International Exchange.

Heather Elaine Sealey and Amber Elizabeth Luthardt have been named to the spring semester dean's list at Radford University.

Stephen S. Perry, Alyssa J. Archer and James S. Mathews have been named to the spring semester dean's list at Randolph-Macon College, Ashland. MILITARY PEOPLE

Navy Cmdr. Joseph M. Catoe, son of retired Lt. Cmdr. and Mrs. Ralph D. Catoe of the 1800 block of Arrowwood St., was recently promoted to his present rank. Catoe is a 1976 graduate of Norview High School and a 1980 graduate of the Naval Academy.

Marine Pfc. Charles S. Sprietsma, a 1990 graduate of Maury High School who recently graduated from recruit training, was named honorman and meritoriously promoted to his present rank at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.
