AREA YOUTH TOURNAMENTS IN FULL SWING

Youth baseball and softball tournaments get underway this week as teams from Districts 6 and 8 and four levels of Pony baseball make their way toward the Little League and Pony League World Series in their respective age divisions.

Area teams will take the field at various sites in the Hampton Roads area at the district level, while two local leagues were selected to host state competitions.

Pony League tournaments begin tonight when District 1 in the Bronco division take the field at Western Branch and the Pony division's District 1 begins play at Bennett's Creek. Pony tournaments continue on Tuesday with District 2 at Western Branch, District 3 at Great Bridge and District 4 at Lynnhaven. Other Bronco tournaments start up again on Wednesday with District 2 at Great Bridge and District 4 at Deep Creek.

The District 3 Bronco tournament began over the weekend, but second round games were canceled due to inclement weather. Action will resume tonight at Little Creek American, beginning at 6 and 8:15 p.m.

District 1 games in the Mustang division begin Tuesday at Diamond Springs Park in Suffolk. Wednesday's action has District 2 at Fairlawn, District 3 at Indian River and District 4 at Lynnhaven.

Winners from the respective divisions advance to sectional tournments which begin on Monday, July 18 with the Pony tournament at Lynnhaven. Wednesday, July 20 marks the start of the Mustang tournament at Great Bridge Elementary and the Bronco tournament at Lynnhaven.

Palomino play begins on Monday, July 18, with the North Section tournament in Suffolk.

Little League district tournaments are in full swing with first-round action that began Saturday. However, elimination games will not start until tonight due to Sunday's rainouts.

Baseball and softball state competition begins next week with tournaments in the Big League division and a first-ever for 10-year-olds.

Plaza Little League in Virginia Beach will host Big League baseball and softball tournaments on Friday, July 22. Norfolk's Azalea Little League will be the site for the 10-year-olds' inaugural softball state tournament.

The Junior baseball division will begin its state tournament next Friday in Danville, Va., as does the Senior division in Warsaw, Va.

The Major girls will begin state softball play on July 22 in Richmond. On the same day, the Senior girls take the field in Woodbridge, Va. by CNB
