Ella Mae Bullard Whittington, 77, of the 1300 block of Lancaster Ave., died July 9, 1994, in her residence.
Mrs. Whittington was retired from the City of Portsmouth as the supervisor of Playgrounds & Parks. She was the first woman to hold the supervisors position with the Department of Parks & Recreation. She retired in 1976 after 20 years of service. She was the widow of Charles Monroe Whittington Jr. She was a member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, Chesapeake. She was a former Sunday School teacher and choir member. She organized the first Portsmouth Senior Citizens Center and various other senior citizens clubs. She was a charter member and past matron of Fellowship Chapter 140 Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn W. Jobe of Chesapeake; two sons, Charles M. Whittington III of Chesapeake and E. Brooks Whittington of Richmond; two sisters, Lillian B. Collins of Clinton, N.C., and Amy B. Williams of Fort Worth, Texas; six grandchildren, Brooks Whittington and Kathleen Whittington, both of Richmond, Stephen N. Jobe Jr., Shelley L. Jobe and Carrie L. Jobe, all of Chesapeake and Joan Whittington of Herndon, Va.
A funeral with an Eastern Star service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by Dr. Albert A. Peverall Jr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. The family will be at the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Building Fund of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church.
