A third-place finish and a seventh-place finish were posted by Portsmouth's two teams in the 21st annual Coca-Cola Youth Duckpin Championship. But one of the local bowlers came back from the Newington, Conn. competition with a $500 scholarship.
Kendra Allen, a Wilson High School student, earned the scholarship by posting the highest scratch series by a girl bowler in the tournament - 398.
Her Victory Lanes team finished third in the Major Division with a handicap pinfall of 2,064. Holiday Lanes of Manchester, Conn., won that division with 2,136.
The other Victory bowlers were Mike Caraway (343), Mike Barnes (328), Beau Hoggard (325) and Jennifer Cullings (295).
The other state champion qualifier from Victory, a Junior team, finished in seventh place. The winner of this division was T-Bowl Lanes of Newington, Conn. with 2,163. The Victory Juniors totaled 2,007 with a 579-pin handicap. Team members were Billy Jordan (327), April Simpson (314), Billy Ragland (273), Jeremy McCready (265) and Kelly Frederick (249).
The Bowlarama Preps of Norfolk won a national championship with a handicap three-game series of 2,160 for an eight-pin victory over runner-up Holiday Lanes of Manchester, Conn.
Bowlarama qualified as state champion with only four bowlers and a blind for an absent fifth bowler. The team had to compete with the blind in the national, too.
Team members were Robert McIntyre, Aimee Miller, Danielle Daneker and Chris Reynolds. Bowlarama had scratch games of 406, 392 and 414 with 948 pins handicap.
Miller paced the prep champs with a 318 series, rolling games of 113, 89 and 116. Miller is only a 58-average bowler. Miller won the Zarrella Award, presented to the bowler who rolls the most pins over average. She was 150 pins over. She also earned a $500 scholarship for high handicap series in the tournament by a girl (519).
Reynolds, who averages 79, posted 91, 90 and 81 for 262. Daneker, also a 56-average bowler, shot games of 75, 84 and 90 for 249. McIntyre, a 52-average scorer, had games of 67, 69 and 67 for 203. The blind score was 60 per game.
The other Virginia champion in the Bantam Division, Plaza Bowl from Richmond, tied for third place.
In addition to the main tournament this year, a singles tournament was held. Barnes won the Major Boys Division with a handicap set of 458. Cullings was third among Major Girls with 432.
McIntyre won the Prep Boys singles with 445 and Reynolds was runner-up with 425. Daneker was third among Prep Girls with 457. by CNB
