NO ``LIMITS'' TO EDWARDS' SOARING STOCK AT SOUTHAMPTON

They don't call Limited Stock driver Tony Edwards ``The Dominator'' without good reason at Southampton Speedway.

The Franklin driver has thoroughly dominated his division the past two season at the 3/8-mile dirt track near Capron, Va.

After winning the championship last year with 13 victories and seven other top-five finishes, he is on course for a second consecutive title this season.

Going into Saturday night's twin-feature races for Limited Stock drivers, Edwards has five victories and a 42-point lead over Johnny West of South Mills, N.C. Edwards has finished worse than third only once this year, on June 10, when he was forced to make two pit stops because of cut tires.

In addition to the pair of 20-lap Limited Stock features, races also are scheduled in the track's four other regular divisions - Late Model Stock, Sportsman, Mini-Stock and Hobby Stock. Time trials begin at 5:45 p.m.; racing at 7.

MIDGETS AT LANGLEY: The ARDC Midget circuit makes its first appearance of the season Saturday night at Langley Raceway in Hampton. The winged, Sprint-style cars are capable of speeds in excess of 125 mph on the 0.4-mile asphalt oval.

The midgets, with drivers mostly from the Northeast, will compete in a pair of heat races in addition to a feature race.

Races also are scheduled in Langley's regular divisions - Late Model Stock, Grand Stock, Limited Stock, Mini-Stock and Pure Stock. Time trials begin at 5 p.m. and the first feature at 7.

AT SOUTH BOSTON: The Busch Grand National circuit returns to South Boston (Va.) Speedway for the Ford Credit 300 on Saturday night. It will be the series' first appearance at the renovated 0.4-mile oval since 1991.

The race is sponsored by Ford Credit and Red Carpet Lease, which also sponsors the Grand National team that fields a car for Chesapeake native Elton Sawyer.

``It certainly gives me a lot of incentive, coming back to my home state to compete in a race that is sponsored by a company that sponsors our team,'' said Saywer, who got his first win on the circuit last month.

Sawyer recalled that he competed frequently at South Boston when he was winning Late Model Stock championships at Langley.

``We are determined to get our second win soon, and I can't think of a better place to do it than at our sponsor's race at South Boston,'' Sawyer said.

A 100-lap Late Model Stock race also is scheduled. For ticket information, call (804)-572-1013. by CNB
