Dr. William Ferguson, 73, of the 8800 block of Bridge Road, a retired physician, died July 17, 1994, in a Newport News hospital.
Dr. Ferguson, a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, was the son of Jean Hoggan Ferguson of Edinburgh and the late Dr. William Ferguson. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and was associated with Maryview and Portsmouth General hospitals.
Dr. Ferguson received the Fellowship in Family Practice from the American Academy of Family Physicians in Atlanta.
Dr. Ferguson practiced general medicine in Suffolk since 1957 until retiring.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served under Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. He was promoted in the field to captain at age 21. As a combat artillery officer in the British 8th Army, Dr. Ferguson participated in the invasions of Italy and Sicily, the conquest of North Africa and D-Day. He also served under Gen. Mark Clark, Commander 5th Army, U.S.A.
Dr. Ferguson was a graduate of Edinburgh University School of Medicine and Surgery. He served a rotating internship at Glens Fall Hospital, Glens Fall, N.Y., and did his staff residencies at Western State Hospital, Staunton, Va., and Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg.
Dr. Ferguson was a lifetime member of the British Medical Association and a member of the American Medical Association, American Association of Foreign Medical Graduates, Southern Medical Association and Medical Society of Virginia. He was also a member of the Portsmouth Academy of Medicine, fellow of the American Geriatric Society, associate of the World Medical Association, associate of the Royal Society of Medicine in Great Britain, American Society of Contemporary Medicine and Surgery, American College of Emergency Physicians and American Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Ferguson also received the Certificates for Advanced Medical Studies, 1977-79, from the American Society of Contemporary Medicine and Surgery, AMA's Physician's Recognition Awards through 1982 and Medical Society of Virginia Continuing Education Awards through 1982.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Reba Hodge Ferguson; two daughters, Susanne Meyer of Richmond and Beverly Williams of Newport News; one son, William James Ferguson of Staunton, Va.; three sisters, Anna Valentine of England, Muriel Christien of Switzerland and Doreen Saxon of Scotland; two brothers, Gordon Ferguson and Alan Ferguson, both of Edinburgh; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Miranda Ferguson, and a brother, Preston Ferguson.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Ebenezer United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carl LeMon and Dr. Charles Gilliam, accompanied by a Scotch piper. Burial will be in Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Va., on Thursday at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, this evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
