ROBB, NORTH TIE FOR LEAD IN NEW SURVEY

The volatility of Virginia's Senate race is reflected in a new poll, for release today, that shows GOP nominee Oliver L. North and Sen. Charles S. Robb tied for the lead. Each was the choice of 29 percent of likely voters surveyed, while the two independents, former Democratic governor L. Douglas Wilder and J. Marshall Coleman, were favored by 16 percent and 11 percent, respectively. Fifteen percent were undecided. Three previous polls have shown Robb leading.

The poll of 527 likely voters was conducted July 7 through Friday by the survey research lab of Virginia Commonwealth University. Poll director Scott Keeter said Wilder is hurting fellow Democrat Robb more than Coleman is detracting from fellow Republican North. Robb was the choice of 43 percent of Democrats surveyed, compared with 30 percent for Wilder; 56 percent of Republicans favored North, and 12 percent chose Coleman.
