EX-CURRITUCK OFFICIAL NAMED TO COASTAL PANEL

A former member of the Currituck County Board of Commissioners is one of six people who have been appointed to the state Coastal Resources Commission, according to state environmental officials.

T. Baxter Williams of Currituck, a former Currituck County commissioner and a former member of the local School Board, was named by Gov. James B. Hunt to fill the commission slot designated for someone with local government experience.

Williams, manager of Currituck Grain Inc., replaces J. Bowen Ross Jr.

Other new members of the commission appointed by Hunt are Bob Emory of New Bern, a land-use management employee with Weyerhaeuser Co., who fills the membership slot designated for forestry expert and replaces David Jennette; and Courtney Hackney of Wilmington, a professor of biology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, who fills the slot designated for a marine ecologist and replaces Ernie Carl.

Hunt also reappointed three members to the commission: Mollie Fearing of Manteo, president of Mollie A. Fearing and Associates Inc., who has served on the CRC since 1993; David McNaught of Washington, executive director of the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation, who has served on the CRC since 1993; and Reggie Caroon of Lowland, owner of Caroon Brothers Seafood, who has served on the CRC since 1986.

All of the appointments were made Tuesday and will expire in four years.

The Coastal Resources Commission is a 15-member board that is in charge of setting policy and establishing regulations that govern development and other activities in 20 counties along the state's coast. by CNB
