Retired Rear Admiral Henry J. Wuensch, former commander of the U.S. Coast Guards 5th District in Portsmouth, Va., of 1111 Fort Hayes Drive, Petersburg, died Saturday, July 23, 1994, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg.
He was a native of Rochester, N.Y., and the son of the late Henry F. and Wilhemina Palmer Wuensch. Adm. Wuensch who graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and later received his MAT in mathematics from Duke University, was also Professor Emeritis at Richard Bland College. Adm. Wuensch served in the Coast Guard for 35 years, and upon retiring taught mathematics at Richard Bland College where he served as chairman of the Mathematics Department and Dean of Students. He was a charter member and past president of the Southside Retired Officers Association, life member of the Reserve Officers Association and a member of the Navy League and Naval Alumni Association, Richmond Chapter.
He is survived by his wife, Carrie Wuensch; a sister, Lena Wuensch of Waverly, Ohio; children and step-children, Patricia Dougherty in Bangladesh; Lawrence Wuensch of Rockledge, Fla., and Barbara Merritt of Worcester, Mass., Brenda Aragon of Albuquerque, N.M., and John Burchett of Alexandria, Va., Sherry Burchett of Richmond, Va., and Kenneth Burchett of Petersburg, Va.; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Fort Lee Memorial Chapel, Fort Lee, Va. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
