Russell Americus Bourne Sr., 76, died Saturday, July 23, 1994, at home following a courageous three year battle with cancer. Mr. Bourne resided in Virginia Beach for 29 years before returning to his birthplace in Rockville, Va., upon retirement in 1980. Mr. Bourne was an active businessman who owned three hardware stores, a drugstore, and a construction company during his career. In his retirement he was active in real estate development. A prominent citizen in the Tidewater area, Mr. Bourne was a charter member, trustee and superintendent of Sunday School at Thalia United Methodist Church, Ruritan president, District Governor, American Legion past commander, and member of the Lions Club. A decorated WWII Army veteran, he was a member of the 29th Division, 116th Infantry and was appointed second in command of Army Intelligence following the Normandy Invasion. Locally Mr. Bourne served as a deacon and elder at Springfield Christian Church and was a member of the Rockville Ruritans.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Browning Bourne; three daughters, Nancy Skeen of Norfolk, Becky Rayner of Raleigh and Debbie Sibley of Rockville; one son, Russell of Ashland; three brothers, David, Abbitt and Franklin; three sisters, Pauline Young, Elizabeth McDougle, Adelaide Stansbury; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Springfield Christian Church in Rockville on Monday, July 25th, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Springfield Christian Church, P.O. Box 130, Rockville, Va. 23146. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the West Chapel of the Bennetts Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. Rd., Richmond, Va.
