DARE'S BOARD OF EDUCATION STAYS AT SEVEN MEMBERS
Qualifying begins at noon Aug. 1 for two seats on the Dare County Board of
Education now held by Donna Buxton and Loretta Michael.
The dates were set after the General Assembly approved a bill, sponsored by
Rep. Bill Culpepper (D-Edenton), allowing the board to remain at seven members
instead of five. The legislation was requested by the board after several
public hearings last year on whether the board should remain at seven members,
or revert to the old five-member board.
The general election is set for November. Winners in November balloting
will take office in December, along with current board members Virginia
Tillett and Fletcher Wiley. Tillett and Wiley were re-elected in May of this
year.
The school board's membership, broken down in the same districts used to
determine the Dare County Board of Commissioners, is as follows: Sam Twiford
is an at-large member of the board. Two members are selected in District 1,
which includes the mainland portion of Roanoke Island. Tillett and Wiley
currently represent the district.
District 2 includes the towns of Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills and all of
Bodie Island south to Oregon Inlet, as well as all of the unincorporated areas
adjacent to or to the west, including, but not limited to, Colington Island
and Baum Bay Harbor. The district is currently represented by Buxton and the
Rev. David Daniels.
Michael represents District 3, which includes the towns of Kitty Hawk and
Southern Shores, and the remainder of the county north and west of Southern
Shores.
Allen Burrus represents District 4, which includes Hatteras Island.
While board membership is broken down by districts, voting is not done by
district. The non-partisan elections are decided by an at-large vote.
