Chincoteague ponies rest in a pen Tuesday at the Chincoteague

National Wildlife Refuge on the Eastern Shore. About 125 ponies will

make the swim across the Assateague Channel this morning for the

annual sale. The origin of the herd of mustangs is unknown, but a

popular theory is that a Spanish ship wrecked offshore and stranded

the ponies.
