After being just one win shy of a trip to the Palomino World Series last year, the Little Creek team is at it again.
Little Creek heads to Greensboro, N.C., today for the South Region Palomino tournament, where it is the defending champion.
``We're favored down in the tournament,'' Little Creek coach Steve Siderias said. ``I think if we keep playing the way we have been, we'll do really well.''
Among the standouts in the North Section tournament were Frank Thompson, otherwise known as Little Creek's ``top gun,'' who fanned 11, allowed no earned runs in 15 innings on the mound and hit .650; shortstop Chris Libbey, who batted .525; and centerfielder Jim Shannon who knocked in 7 runs with a
The double elimination tournament features four teams and the winner advances to the National East Zone tournament in Butler, Pa., on Aug. 5.
Little Creek will face South Section winner, Doyle Enterprises, Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
TIDEWATER BLASTERS: The 11-and-under team will play in the National AAU tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, on Sunday, after going undefeated in the state tournament in April at Great Neck Recreation Center.
The Blasters posted a .508 team batting average in the state tournament. Chris McKee went 9-for-9 to lead the offensive attack; Jason Woody batted earned run average and 17 strikeouts in 10 innings.
The Olympic-style tournament features six 5-team pools. The top two teams in each pool advance to a double-elimination championship round.
UNDER-15 BLASTERS: The Tidewater Blasters under-15 team will travel to Gaithersburg, Md., for the Region Invitational tournament this weekend.
The Blasters took home a bronze medal in the state qualifier and compiled a 21-6 record.
Starring for the Blasters are first baseman Jason Dubois (.450), third baseman Cory Bauswell (.425), pitcher Mike Vizcaino (.510) and pitcher James Fitscar (3-0, 1.76 ERA).
