Specialty foods producer The Smithfield Companies Inc. posted higher profits in the quarter ended June 30 despite a drop in sales. The Portsmouth-based holding company had net income of $157,538, up 32.7 percent from the same period a year earlier. Sales fell to $7.8 million from $8.6 million. The company blamed the decline in sales on weak demand for country ham and the loss of a mass merchandiser. (Staff) by CNB
