George Hails ``Sonny'' Mapes Jr., 63, of the 200 block of Blaine Court, a retired blacksmith, died Aug. 2, 1994, in Norfolk.
Mr. Mapes was born in Newport News and was retired from Norshipco after 39 years.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth T. Mapes; two daughters, Shirley Jones of Chesapeake and Connie Dale of Portsmouth; two sons, William E. Mapes of Chesapeake and Kevin K. Mapes of Hertford, N.C.; three stepchildren, Debra Clairdge of Slidell, La., Jerry Moore and Joe Moore, both of Virginia Beach; five sisters, Mary Frommal, Ada Mapes, Barbara Wiggs, all of Chesapeake, Cora Nash of Staunton, Va., and Georgie Dixon of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, David Mapes of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Tammy, Jenny, Shelby, Jessica, Brandon, Tracey and T.J.; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, by the Rev. Howard Bass. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. Friends may join the family at the funeral home for visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. today. At other times the family will be at 205 Blaine Court, Virginia Beach, or 336 Middle Oaks Drive, Chesapeake.
