DARE PLANNING PITCH TO BABE RUTH BOYS

NORTH CAROLINA crowned its 1994 Babe Ruth Girls Softball champions last weekend, but Dare County may wind up as the big winner.

Parks and Recreation officials say that Dare County is receiving ``serious, serious'' consideration as host for the 1996 Babe Ruth Baseball World Series.

``We're going to show Babe Ruth Baseball what Dare County can offer,'' said Dare County Parks and Recreation director Johnny Tillett. ``This is the best place to hold a world series. The young people who come here can kill two birds with one stone. We have so much history here, that they'll be able to learn about the history and play a heck of a lot of baseball.''

Tillett said the county will offer an unbeatable combination.

``They'll get to play ball and spend a week at the beach. That's a great thing for the kids,'' he said.

A delegation from Dare County is scheduled to attend the Babe Ruth World Series in Indianapolis to make their pitch to league officials.

The strong showing by the county in last weekend's North Carolina girls championships will no doubt boost its chances for the tourney, which would bring in teams from all over the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

``The people of Dare County did an outstanding job. With all of the rain we had last week, only one game was slightly delayed, but we still got that game in,'' Tillett said. ``We had volunteers, not only from the county, but workers from all of the municipalities pitched in to help. I've gotten a lot of positive calls. Dare County should be very proud.''

Winners in the tournament were Black Mountain in the 9- and 10- year-old division, Garner in the 11- and 12-year-old championship, Pitt County in the 13- to 15-year-old group, and South Wayne in the 16-18 championship. by CNB
