After one week of qualifying for two seats on the Dare County Board of Education, only the incumbents have joined the fray.
Board members Loretta Michael and Donna Buxton have filed qualifying papers with the Dare County Board of Elections for the November general election.
The election became necessary following the North Carolina General Assembly's passage of a bill making permanent the expansion of the board from five to seven members.
Buxton, along with Rev. David Daniels, represents District 2. The district includes the towns of Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head and all of Bodie Island south to Oregon Inlet.
The district also includes unincorporated areas, adjacent to or to the west including, but not limited to, Colington Island and Baum Bay Harbor.
Michael represents District 3, which includes the towns of Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores, as well as portions of the county to the north and west of Southern Shores.
School board districts match the districts used to select the Dare County Board of Commissioners. However, unlike county commissioners, which are elected by a district vote, school board members are chosen in at-large elections.
Board Chairman Virginia Tillett and Board member Fletcher Wiley were re-elected in May. They will take office in December, along with winners of the November general election.
