GRANBY HIGH MICHAEL J. CAPRIO

MICHAEL J. CAPRIO

Birthplace: Norfolk

Birthdate: July 9, 1944

Family: Wife, True; two daughters, Temby, 25, and Lia, 22.

Pets: Two golden Labrador retrievers, Bo and Maui.

Education: Undergraduate degree in elementary education and master's degree in science and education and from Old Dominion University. CAST degree with 30 additional postgraudate hours.

Previous position: Principal at Blair Middle. Before that spent 14 years as principal of three Norfolk elementary schools - Tidewater Park, Little Creek and W.H. Taylor.

Goals: ``To open the lines of communication between the communities and the school. They seem to have fallen down somewhat. I'm going out into the community. I'd like to re-establish a Booster Club and a PTA where parents and teachers get together to benefit the kids.''

Obstacles: ``The major concern I've heard is students' cutting classes and parent-teacher communication. I hope people will give me a shot at re-establishing some of the traditions and the pride that were established in the 1950s and the '60s and will work with me to obtain these goals by keeping an open mind.''

Proudest accomplishment as an educator: ``Having students come back who have really succeeded and hearing their success stories, and meeting my students on the street and knowing I had something to do with their success.''

Hobbies: Tennis, bicycling, winter basketball league.

Book you'd recommend: ``A Time To Kill,'' by John Grisham. All-time favorite, ``The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,'' by Mark Twain. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
