Expansion of the city's zoo will help revitalize Park Place and the central Granby Street retail corridor, says Mayor Paul D. Fraim.
Merchants and residents near the zoo have long called for improvements at the Virginia Zoo. Nearby neighborhoods include Park Place, Riverview and Colonial Place.
Now, the Virginia Zoological Society is preparing to embark on a major fund-raising effort for zoo expansion.
``It would help improve our tourist base,'' Fraim said. ``But more specifically, it would help the entire Granby Street corridor, especially from the Granby Street bridge on into downtown. And, a primary beneficiary of that would be Park Place.''
The city's planning department already has proposed a commercial revitalization study that would include retail areas of central Granby Street near Riverview and 35th Street in Park Place.
