NORTH TOWER TO PERFORM FRIDAY AT CONSTANT'S WHARF

If you like beach music, Motown, top-40, The Platters, The Four Tops, even the old Big Band sound of Glenn Miller, it is all available from North Tower.

The versatile North Carolina band will be part of the city's ``Summer Celebration'' on Friday at Constant's Wharf.

The popular series of outdoor concerts, presented by the Department of Parks and Recreation and sponsored by WJQI and Budweiser, looked to Raleigh for some musical versatility.

North Tower prides itself in not offering what the band calls, in its press release, ``the same old thing'' as other groups.

Instead, band members try to read the crowd and perform accordingly. The variety they can offer allows them to do that.

If the crowd wants to swing, North Tower can come up with ``In the Mood,'' ``Pennsylvania 6-5000,'' ``Tuxedo Junction'' and ``String of Pearls'' by Glenn Miller, as well as Duke Ellington's ``Take the A Train.''

Are you into country? The band can offer such Oak Ridge Boys' items as ``Bobbie Sue,'' ``Come On In'' and ``Elvira.''

North Tower's mainstays are such early rock offerings as ``Midnight Hour'' by Wilson Pickett, ``Good Golly Miss Molly'' from Little Richard, and Billy Ocean's ``Love Really Hurts.''

Songs by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Commodores, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and other Motown acts are all on the North Tower play list.

The band originated in the late 1970s as a vocal group at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

They lived in the north tower of the ``Old Fast'' dorm - hence, the name. MEMO: Suffolk Summer Celebration, presented by the Department of Parks and
