SCHOOL HOURS: All senior high and middle schools will hold classes from 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Elementary - students attend school from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
MEALS: Lunch costs: Senior high - 95 cents for students and $1.75 for adults; middle schools - 85 cents; elementary schools - 75 cents. Breakfast for K-12 students is 50 cents.
Eligibility guidelines for reduced price lunches are available at each school.
Weekly lunch tickets are available.
MEDICATION POLICY: Administering medicines during school hours is discouraged. When it is necessary, permission forms available at the schools are required from both parents and doctor. Medicines are given by the school nurse or the principal's designee.
NEWS ABOUT SCHOOLS: Any subscriber to Falcon Cable TV can receive WSPS-Cable Channel 6, Suffolk Public Schools' educational access channel. A 24-hour message board keeps viewers informed of upcoming meetings and events. WSPS also re-broadcasts the monthly Suffolk School Board meeting, as well as a regular schedule of programs and videos.
IMMUNIZATIONS: Every student enrolling in Suffolk Public Schools is required to present proof of the required immunizations: three doses of DPT (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) vaccine, with one dose received after fourth birthday; three doses of oral polio vaccine, with first dose received after 12 months of age or older, and second dose received upon enrollment in kindergarten; sixth-grade students must show proof of having had a second measles shot upon enrollment in middle school; one dose of rubella (German measles) vaccine received at 12 months of age or older; one dose of mumps vaccine received at 12 months of age or older.
An emergency card for each student is requested to be on file in the school attended.
REGISTER NOW: Students new to Suffolk Public Schools should call the school where they will attend. Either the school secretary or the guidance counselor will let them know what information is required according to the student's grade level and placement needs.
Every student enrolling is required to present a birth certificate, Social Security number, proof of a physical examination and immunization.
If you don't know what school your child is supposed to attend, call the Central Office at 925-5500 and someone will check your street address against a computerized listing of school attendance zones.
SCHOOL CLOSINGS: If it becomes necessary to close schools because of inclement weather or for any other reason, the closings will be announced on area television stations, radio stations and on WSPS-Cable Channel 6.
REPORT CARDS: Report cards will be issued Oct. 27, Dec. 12, Feb. 6, March 23, May 11 and June 14 (for elementary and middle schools only.) High school report cards will be available for pickup at the school the week of June 19.

EARLY CLOSING DATES: All Suffolk Public Schools will close early on the following dates: Dec. 2, Jan. 23-26, June 12-14. On those days, secondary schools will close at 11:45 a.m. and elementary schools will close at 1 p.m.
MAKEUP DAYS: The first two days missed will be made up on the Saturday immediately after each day missed. If two successive days are missed, the second Saturday makeup day should be two weeks after the first Saturday makeup day. If the missed day is a Friday, it will not be made up the next day (Saturday), but the following Saturday. The third makeup day should be Presidents' Day on Feb. 20. The fourth and fifth makeup days should be June 15 and June 16.
VOLUNTEERS: All schools encourage students' families to get involved. Volunteers are matched according to their talents, skills and interests with the needs of teachers, students and the school. Call your child's school or your neighborhood school to volunteer.
STATISTICS: There are approximately 9,400 students enrolled in Suffolk's 15 public schools.
The 1994-95 school budget is $48,193,143, which includes operating funds of $42,528,150, plus money from the federal grants fund and food services fund.
The seven-member School Board has its regular meetings on the second Thursday of each month in the City Council chambers, located in the Municipal Building at 441 Market St. Meetings, which begin at 7:30 p.m., are broadcast live on Cable Channel 13 and re-broadcast on WSPS-Cable Channel 6, the district's television channel, throughout the following week.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Parents are encouraged to wait to buy specialized materials (protractors, colored pencils, etc.) until the first day of classes. If parents want to purchase items in advance, they should call the school their child will attend to find out what materials the student will need.
SCHOOL FEES: Textbooks will be provided free of charge. Books also can be purchased from the textbook depository. Depending on the grade level and school, students must also pay fees for lockers, physical education clothes and other specific items.
NEW COURSES: Both high schools will implement a second program of study this year under the new Tech Prep initiative in marketing and merchandising management. A Tech Prep program in business/office technology began last school year. In addition, a middle school career exploration program called ``Careers and You'' - which allows students to explore diverse careers before choosing secondary and post-secondary career education electives - will be piloted at John Yeates Middle School this fall. John F. Kennedy and Forest Glen middle schools will start the program in spring 1995. OTHER INSTRUCTIONAL CHANGES: All 10 of our elementary schools will have new computer laboratories (10 computers at each of the 10 elementary schools). These labs will have CD-ROM capabilities. Call Calvin Mitchell, technology specialist, at 925-5731 for more information.
