J. VAUGHAN BEALE

J. Vaughan Beale of Franklin died Aug. 11, 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Marydele S. Beale; a daughter, Linda Dell B. Tennent of Laurens, S.C.; two sons, Jim Vaughan Beale Jr. of Southampton County and J. Burkhardt Beale of Woodbridge, Va.; four grandchildren, Charles H. Tennent Jr., B. Vaughan Beale Tennent, Marydele H. Tennent and Jonathan Linwood Beale; a nephew, a niece and numerous cousins.

Mr. Beale was born in Franklin on Dec. 8, 1915. He attended Franklin High School, where he lettered in football, baseball and track. He received his B.A., L.L.B. and J.D. degrees from Washington & Lee University in 1936 and 1939, and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Social Fraternity, served as student body president and was inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa Fraternity for Academic Excellence.

After graduation from Washington & Lee, Mr. Beale worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and served in the New York, Buffalo and Norfolk offices. He also served as firearms instructor at the FBI Academy in Quantico. Mr. Beale then returned to Franklin to practice law for 50 years.

He served on the Franklin Town Council as a councilman. He also served as Commonwealth's Attorney for the County of Southampton, substitute Judge and Commissioner in Chancery.

He was a member of the Virginia State Bar and Southampton County Bar Association and served on numerous committees of the bar associations. Mr. Beale was a member of Franklin Congregational Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a member and former president of the Franklin Lions Club and a former member of the board of directors of Crestar Bank in Franklin and Norfolk.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Poplar Spring Cemetery with the Rev. Lafayette T. Wilkins officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Dorothy C. Beale, 113 Oakwood Drive, Franklin, immediately following the funeral, and suggest that memorial donations be made to a favorite charity. Wright Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
