Virginia Beach teams captured two divisional titles in the 13th annual Tidewater Softball Championships on Friday at Greenbrier Park in front of a crowd of approximately 1,500.
Coed squad Superior/Hudgins slaughter-ruled Norfolk's Bad Company, 17-5, in five innings, while women's team Superior Pest Control upended the D.C. Controllers of Chesapeake, 9-5.
Chesapeake captured the church title, with the Mt. Pleasant Mennonites defeating fellow Chesapeake team Bethel Baptist, 12-0, in six innings. Norfolk took the men's crown, with Clancy's defending its 1993 crown with a 22-16 victory over Harrison's Moving/Commerce Bank of Portsmouth.
``We got in a hole early in the contest and couldn't come out,'' Harrisons/Commerce coach Warren Kozak said. ``We didn't hit well and they did. You can't beat those guys with three scoreless innings.''
In a game that saw 10 home runs - eight by Clancy's, including three by Mike Williams - Clancy's jumped out to a 6-1 first-inning lead and never looked back.
In the coed competition, Superior/Hudgins' Gina Sevills was named the women's MVP, while Adam Stephen earned the men's honor. Sevills was 2-for-3 in the championship, while Stephen was 2-for-4.
Beanie Felch of Superior Pest Control was named the women's MVP. The Lake Taylor softball and field hockey coach was 7-for-10 in three games with seven RBIs.
Felch also won the women's accuracy hitting contest during intermission, beating Kristen Allen of the Superior/Hudgins coed team and Shirley Gilchrist of the D.C. Controllers in a hit-off.
Randy Miller of Mt. Pleasant was named the church division MVP, and Kenny Kirby, brother of Miami Dolphins running back Terry Kirby, was named the men's MVP. MEMO: Ricky Bailey contributed to this story.
