The U.S. House of Representatives has approved H.R. 4772, a bill to name the federal building in Greenville in honor of the late Rep. Walter B. Jones. Among the speakers during the debate were the bill's cosponsors, Rep. Martin Lancaster, in whose congressional district the building is located, and Rep. Eva Clayton.
The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate.
Walter Jones Sr. served eastern North Carolina in the House from February 1966 until his death in September 1992.
``During his twenty-six years in Washington, he demonstrated time and again that he considered his duty to his constituents to be his highest priority,'' Lancaster said on the House floor. ``The people of the former 1st Congressional District sensed his love for them, and they returned that love in many forms and on numerous occasions.
``It is altogether fitting that this House honor Walter by passing this legislation.'' by CNB
