Three big war re-enactments are coming up in Northern Virginia:

The 130th anniversary of the 1864 Valley Campaign of the Civil War (Phil Sheridan, U.S.A., vs. Jubal Early, C.S.A.) will be played out Saturday and next Sunday on the grounds of beautiful Long Branch Plantation off U.S. 17 and 50 near Millwood, a few miles east of Winchester. Battles will be ``fought'' at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday, 12:30 and 1:30 Sunday. Cost: $9 admission (6 and under freee) plus $4 parking; $10 for motorhomes and $25 for buses. Info: (717) 337-9483.

The 130th anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Creek will be reenacted Oct. 15-16 at historic Belle Grove Plantation at Middletown on U.S. 11 just south of Winchester. This huge re-enactment is held annually to raise money to preserve 158 acres of the original battle site. Battles will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. Cost: $8 (12 and under free) includes parking, battles, symposium, quilting and artifacts exhibits in Belle Grove. Info: (703) 869-2064.

Leesburg will host a Revolutionary War encampment and battle re-enactments Oct. 22-23 to commemorate with 213th anniversary of the American-French victory over the British at Yorktown. About 1,000 re-enactors are expected. Battles will be held each day; on Sunday the 3rd Infantry (Old Guard) Fife and Drum Corps will parade through the town's historic district, which dates to 1758. Leesburg is at the junction of U.S. 15 and Va. 7, less than an hour northwest of Washington. Cost: admission is free; parking is $5. Info: (703) 777-1262. TRIPS TO TAKE

Grand Teton kayaking: From an island base camp on Jackson Lake in the Grand Teton National Park, participants can take three-day kayaking trips through Sept. 15, stopping along the forest's edge to hike, fish and view wildlife. Those who don't want to paddle their own kayak can ride in a support boat. Participants camp out in two-person tents. Cost: $290 for adults and $190 for children 15 and under, including camping equipment (sleeping bags can be rented) and meals. Not included: air fare to Jackson Hole, Wyo. Info: O.A.R.S., P.O. Trailing Lewis and Clark: Journey down part of the historic trail of Lewis and Clark on a seven-day cruise that starts in Portland, Ore., and sails from the Willamette River basin up the Columbia and Snake rivers. The cruise passes the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains and the Columbia River Gorge, to the arid eastern plateaus and wine country. Passengers will board jet boats on the Snake River and take a swift ride through Hells Canyon, the deepest gorge in North America. One leg of the trip is a train excursion through the forest and orchards at the base of Mount Hood. Another stop: the Bonneville Dam, to see migrating salmon through underwater viewing windows. The ship accommodates 70 passengers. Departures are available Oct. 17, 19, 25 and 29. Prices range from $1,890 to $2,820, per person, double occupancy, plus airfare to Portland.
