SPORTS EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR NAMED: Joe Langston has been named athletic director at Norcom High School.

Langston will continue his duties as head coach in football and boys track.

Langston, 52, succeeds Charles Nixon as athletic director. Nixon stepped down due to health problems.

Langston, a graduate of Norcom and Norfolk State, has been football and track coach at Norcom for the past 20 years. He was an assistant coach at Cradock for three years and at Wilson for three years before moving to Norcom.

He is now the winningest football coach in Portsmouth history. His 1993 Norcom squad won the Division 5 state championship, compiling a 14-0 record. Overall at Norcom, Langston has a 134-72-4 record.

STATE SOFTBALL TOURNEY: In state tournament play in Major Little League softball, the District 6 representative, Western Branch, placed third among the 15 qualifiers.

Western Branch ousted Lynchburg of District 2, 10-4, and Green Run of District 8, 10-6, before yielding to McLean of District 9, 11-7.

In the Senior Division state final, Western Branch, the District 6 winner, won two games before being eliminated.

Western Branch opened with an 11-6 victory over District 15 champ Richmond County. Woodbridge then dropped Western Branch into the losers bracket with a 13-1 victory. Western Branch rebounded for a 22-1 triumph over District 2 titlist Lynchburg. Tuckahoe, the District 5 winner, then eliminated Western Branch, 10-7.

WINNING GOLF TEAM: Melvin Holland, Bill Sherrill, Stan Dobson and Cliff Forrest teamed up to win the third annual Carl Opauski Memorial Scholarship golf tournament at Sleepy Hole.

The tournament, which offers a scholarship annually to an outstanding graduating senior at Deep Creek High School in memory of the former coach and athletic director, drew a field of 140.

The winning team had a score of 17 under par.

The second-flight winners were Donald Hundley, Terry Forehand, Paul Neumann and Benn Griffin at 8 under par.

The third-flight winners, at 4 under par, were Johnnie Wood, Jerry Hasty, Chris Ettel and Kenny Turner.

Tournament director Jimmy Williams said the proceeds of $5,000 will be contributed to the scholarship fund at Deep Creek.

BOXING BOUTS SET: Several fighters from the Portsmouth Athletic Club will vie on the Saturday, Aug. 27, amateur boxing card at Norfolk Elks Lodge 38 on Raby Road.

The bouts will start at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10. For information, call the PAC gym at 399-8454 or the Elks Lodge at 461-6244.

FALL SOFTBALL: The Western Branch Girls Fast Pitch Softball Association is having a fall ball program for players 9-15. Registration will take place at the Russell Memorial Library on Taylor Road at the following dates and times: Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fee is $20 for returning players and $25 for newcomers.
