MAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER BOAT FLIPS AT HAMPTON COMPETITION

A gust of wind sent boat and driver flying Saturday at the start of a qualifying heat at the Hampton Cup Regatta.

Charles Wiggins, 25, of Gadsden, Ala., skidded across the water of Mill Creek when his 1-liter Modified boat flipped. Wiggins was flown by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk where he was treated for broken ribs, and neck and back injuries.

His boat, Supply and Demand, was sent airborne by a gust of wind as it roared down a straightaway.

Wiggins was quickly pulled from the water around 2 p.m. Hospital officials said Wiggins was in stable condition and probably would be kept in the hospital for several days for observation.
