The owner of a South Norfolk lounge was charged with murder Sunday after a customer who had been ordered to leave the establishment was shot to death.
Police said David Manning II, 34, of the 300 block of Cobblewood Arch, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after midnight. The shooting occurred at the Moonraker Restaurant and Lounge in the 700 block of 22nd St.
Wallace Evans, 58, of the 700 block of Doumar St. in Norfolk was being held at the city jail Sunday in lieu of bond on charges of murder and using a firearm while committing a felony.
``While the reason for this murder is not clear, investigators have ruled out self defense,'' said Richard Black, a police spokesman.
A witness told police that Manning first tried to enter the bar late Saturday but was initially refused admission when he set off an alarm as he passed through a metal detector at the front door.
Told by an employee that he could not enter the establishment with a weapon, Manning left. He came back about five minutes later and, after passing through the detector without incident, was allowed in the bar.
He'd been in the lounge only a few minutes, however, when he was again asked to leave by an employee, this time because he was apparently intoxicated.
As Manning was being escorted to the door, Evans confronted him and a brief argument broke out. The nature of the disagreement was not clear, however.
Police said witnesses told them that Manning turned and ran and that Evans then pulled out a handgun.
At least one shot was fired in the bar, but it missed Manning.
Evans chased Manning outside, police said.
Witnesses said they heard one shot from behind the building a few moments later.
Police later found the weapon Manning had apparently been carrying when he first failed the metal detector test - a folding pocket knife - near his car.
``It doesn't appear That Manning and Evans had ever met'' before the incident, Black said.
