Alvin R. Ricks, 65, of the 1300 block of Sunnybrook Terrace, a retired educator, died Aug. 15, 1994, in his home.
Mr. Ricks was born in Portsmouth and was retired from the Philadelphia Public School System after 30 years. He was a member and trustee of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth; served as chairman and secretary of the Trustee Board; served 25 years as president of the Crusaders Club; was a pulpit layman under the Rev. Harvey N. Johnson; organized Crusaders Bible Class; was chairman of the 125th year Anniversary Committee; and chairman, History Book Committee; and served on many other church committees.
Alvin had been actively involved in numerous civic, community and fraternal organizations. Among these affiliations are Wilson Ward of Central Civic Forum; board of directors, Portsmouth Chapter of the March of Dimes; past secretary and past president of Effingham Branch YMCA; and past secretary, Portsmouth Chapter Planned Parenthood of the Eureka Club. His fraternal organization included membership in the Zeta Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; Mount Gilead Lodge (NU)102, F&AM; Masons, Alpha and Omega Consistory (NU)9 of 32nd degree Masons; Arabia Temple (NU)12; Order of Shrine and Martha Chapter (NU)10 Order of Eastern Star.
He served four years in the Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Helen E. Ricks; a daughter, Angela Ricks Lindsey and son-in-law, Troy A. Lindsey, of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Elizabeth R. Wilkins of Portsmouth; two aunts, Daisy C. Ellis of Portsmouth and Mary E. Griffin of Chesapeake; and a host of relatives and friends; and a special aunt, Lissie Blanton of Chesapeake.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Ben A. Beamer Sr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, with military honors. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Friday in Corprew Funeral Home.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
