WILSON HIGH SCHOOL will be returning to Frank D. Lawrence Stadium for home football games this season.
Last year the Presidents played at Churchland, the former home base for Manor.
``We have a lot of players who live near Lawrence Stadium and it will be a lot more convenient for us,'' Wilson coach Jenson Baker said.
MANY OF THE coaches at Wilson believe the practice field at the school could be converted into a home stadium for the Presidents with a minimum expense.
The Olive Branch Little League is in the process of building a concession stand at the site.
Presently there are a limited number of bleachers on each side of the football field. These bleachers all could be placed on the east side to accommodate the visitors. A larger section could be erected on the west for Wilson fans.
The field needs little work to be in playing condition. The junior varsity already plays games there.
A lighting system is the major obstacle.
RONALD McDONALD HOUSE will receive $5,000 from the Scott Morris Memorial Golf Tournament.
Forty-one 4-player teams participated in the third annual tournament at Sleepy Hole. Mark Beecham, Stacy Brett, Kevin McCaskill and Doug Larson claimed the championship.
Runners-up were Mark Marsh, Rick Bidnick, Kenny Wren and Ryan Henry.
The first flight winners were Lenny Willis, Mike Ward, Buddy McKinley and Mike Dailey. McKinley also won the closest-to-the-pin contest.
THE VIRGINIA BLASTERS 13-under team will sponsor a Labor Day baseball tournament at Currituck High School on Sept. 2-5.
Entry fee is $175 and the registration deadline is Aug. 25.
Each team will play four games in the AAU-sanctioned event. For more information, call Champ Harper at 482-5014.
The high school is off Highway 158 South.
THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE of Tony Guzzo, Old Dominion University's new head baseball coach, was quite evident at his Monday appearance before the Portsmouth Sports Club.
Guzzo feels the Bud Metheny complex can match up with any in college baseball and will be a big plus in recruiting.
In the not-to-distant future Guzzo will have 500 baseball coaching victories under his belt. His teams at North Carolina Wesleyan won 106 games and his Virginia Commonwealth clubs the past 12 years won 329.
Also honored at the Sports Club meeting was Wilson hurdler LaTasha Colander, who received the club's award as the area's outstanding track performer.
The Sports Club is planning its second reverse raffle Oct. 27 at the Ambassadors Club. Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by MARK MITCHELL
