Chesapeake's municipal recreation program, extensive as it is, has never been able to meet all the needs of the city's active and growing population. Since 1985, the Chesapeake Family YMCA has helped to fill the gap by offering a variety of aquatic, fitness and child-care programs for citizens of all ages.
The local Y now boasts a membership of 4,452 and is one of the fastest-growing YMCA associations in the nation. Demand for the Y's facilities and services has become so great that folks are being turned away due to a lack of space.
In response to the need, the Y's Board of Management has undertaken to raise $280,000 to build a new gymnasium, exercise center, child-care facilities and multipurpose area for expanded health and family programs. The new additions, which are scheduled to open by early next summer, should permit the Y to extend its services to 3,000 more children and adults.
The United Way will match, nearly dollar for dollar, contributions to the Y's capital campaign, but the success of the effort depends heavily on a generous response from local businesses and individuals.
When a campaign volunteer calls on you, remember that a contribution to the Y is a contribution to the health and well-being of Chesapeake. by CNB
