The 44-year-old man who drowned while trying to rescue his wife in the surf just south of the Hatteras lighthouse Monday afternoon was identified as John Patrick Shields of Walton Hills, Ohio.
His wife, Janice Shields, was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital Monday. She was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday morning, National Park Service spokesman Bob Woody said.
