NEW SHIPS DUE IN NORFOLK:
Norfolk Naval Station gets three new ships this week - one new and two relocated under action by the 1993 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission. The ships - the Stout, Estocin and Thorn - bring to Norfolk 904 crew members with annual income of about $26.5 million. The Stout, commissioned Aug. 13, is the fifth Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer. The Estocin and Thorn are being relocated from Newport, R.I., after the commission realigned naval facilities there. The Estocin, commissioned in 1981, is a Navy reserve ship. The Thorn, commissioned in 1980, is a Spruance-class destroyer. Norfolk is scheduled to get 12 new ships this year and lose 21 to retirement.
VISITORS FROM FLORIDA:
Officials from Jacksonville, Fla., are visiting Norfolk Naval Aviation Depot today and Thursday to help employees who are relocating as the Norfolk depot is phased out. The Jacksonville Naval Aviation Depot is picking up work done at Norfolk on the F-14 Tomcat. The Norfolk depot was ordered shut by the base-closing commission last year. The Jacksonville Community Information Fair is in Building V-88 at Norfolk Naval Station.
