FEDER SOPHOMORIC

After reading columnist Don Feder's ``If liberals walked the walk'' (op-ed, Aug. 15), I came closer than ever before during the past few months to canceling my subscription.

Mr. Feder not only merely criticized the Clintons or the left (I've met leftists, and the Clintons are no leftists) but also gratuitously and obnoxiously vented his spleen as in ``Yuppie couple . . . sticks their snouts so far in the trough,'' or ``Liberals with preschoolers would put them in day-care centers run by pedophiles,'' or ``If the Clintons really care about health care for all, they should have gone to medical school, moved to Appalachia and opened a free clinic. . . .''

Such rancor and ridicule serve not only to trivialize serious problems, but they also perpetuate the notion that America cannot survive as a pluralistic society.

I have been a fan of The Virginian-Pilot for more than 10 years and would greatly miss my daily copy. Therefore, I strongly urge you to look hard at the journalistic abilities of your op-ed columnists and consider dumping Mr. Feder and his sophomoric grievances.
