CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION: ***************************************************************** A story Thursday incorrectly identified the location of a drowning in Nags Head. George Irving Thompson Jr., a resident of Nags Head Cove, died early Wednesday after diving into shallow water off a pier behind the Villas condominium complex. Correction published Friday, September 2, 1994, page B3, N.C. edition. ***************************************************************** MAN FOUND DROWNED IN 2 FEET OF WATER IN ROANOKE SOUND

A 30-year-old Nags Head man apparently drowned in Roanoke Sound early Wednesday after diving off the pier behind the Nags Head Cove clubhouse.

George Irving Thompson Jr., who lived in the Nags Head Cove subdivision and worked at Hardee's Restaurant in Manteo, was found face down in 2-foot-deep water at about 3:10 a.m., Nags Head acting Police Chief Wayne Byrum said.

``It appears he dove in head-first and may have broken his neck,'' Byrum said. ``Some teenagers found his car keys, shoes, shirt and a couple of beer cans on the end of the pier. They alerted the clubhouse security guard. And he found the victim.''

Earlier in the evening, Thompson's brother had been at the pier with him, Byrum said, and then went to sleep in a pickup parked at the end of the pier. The brother told officers that Thompson had gone swimming.

``The death appears to be accidental. We will not conduct any further investigation,'' Byrum said.

The death was the fourth in Outer Banks waters in August.
