Gladys Whitfield White, 74, of the 2300 block of Rock Creek Road, a retired teacher, died Aug. 31, 1994, in Chesapeake General Hospital.
Mrs. White was born in Norfolk. She had retired from the Rocky Mount, N.C., school system after 30 years. She was the widow of James O. White and was a member of Epiphany Episcopal Church, Rocky Mount, N.C. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a Silhouette. Gladys attended public school in Norfolk, graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in 1936. She went on to receive a bachelor's degree in education from Shaw University and, later a master's degree from Columbia University. She was predeceased by her parents, the Rev. Dora Clark Whitfield Gaston and the Rev. Benjamin Charles Whitfield.
Survivors include a daughter, Angela Lynnette White of Chesapeake; an uncle, Carl W. Clark of Norfolk; and a host of cousins and friends.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Hale Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Melvin E. Clark. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will have a memorial service Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Family will assemble at her residence, 2316 Rock Creek Drive, Chesapeake.
