William Copes Wescott Jr., 71, of the 700 block of Stockley Gardens, died September 7, 1994, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Mr. Wescott was a lifelong resident of Norfolk, and was the son of the late William Copes Wescott and Lucy Ione Anderson Wescott, and was preceded in death by his former wife Jean Machen Wescott. He was the owner and president of Wescott Company, which was founded by his father over 50 years ago. He was a member of and former deacon of Second Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, Virginia.
Mr. Wescott leaves a legacy of a lifetime of service to the community and his country. An Army veteran of WWII and a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He retired as a Major from the 111th Field Artillery of the 29th Division of the National Guard after 30 years of service. He was also a member of the 2nd Lafayette Brigade, George Washington Division of the Virginia Defense Force.
Mr. Wescott was a past president of the National Office Machine Dealers Association, The Eastern Region Office Machine Dealers Association and the Hampton Roads Office Machine Dealers Association. He served as National Education Coordinator for the National Office Machine Dealers Association. He was a member of the Ghent Business Association, The Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, The Better Business Bureau and was a past president of the Sunrise Optimist Club, and was a 32nd Degree Shriner, and a longtime member of the Norfolk Boat Club.
Survivors include his loving wife, Linda Darden Wescott, his son William Copes Wescott III of Chesterfield County, Va., and his daughter Parker Wescott Thompson and a granddaughter, Rowan Wescott Thompson of Knoxville, Tennessee. His sister Rose Wescott Chapman of Norfolk and a stepdaughter Page Moorefield Hyler of Roanoke and stepsons Robert A. Moorefield of Annandale, Va., and Frank Darden Moorefield of New York City, NY., and Alexander Randolph Thomas of Norfolk.
A church service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Second Presbyterian Church of Norfolk by the Reverend Steven Frazier. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Children's Hospital of The Kings Daughters, P.O. Box 2156, Norfolk, Va. 23501-2156, or the Virginia Office Machine Dealer's Association Scholarship Fund, C/O Janet's Office Supply, 2215 High Street, Portsmouth, Va. 23704.
