STUMP STYLES

Style or substance. Image or issues. On these distinctions seem to turn many voters' questions these days. Is the political candidate more concerned about his hair than health care? More interested in bodyguards than crime reform?

With that in mind, Virginian-Pilot staff writers who reported on the Labor Day campaigning for Virginia's U.S. Senate seat have jotted down observations about the four candidates' stump styles. Here are some observations - and intimations - picked up by our reporters as they watched the candidates try to carve out an identity for themselves with voters. ILLUSTRATION: Staff chart by Pai

The candidates tell: patron saint; fashion statement; best campaign

stunt; mode of transportation; most outrageous statement; biggest

enemy; favorite movie; campaign contributions through 6-30-94; books

on nightstand.
