THE LATEST SCENARIO ON HAITI

ILLUSTRATION: Graphic with drawings

After a quick stop in Norfolk, the carrier Eisenhower and command

ship Mount Whitney head to the Caribbean next week to join the

growing force training for a Haiti invasion. The Ike will leave

behind many of its aircraft to make room for passengers: thousands

of troops from the Army's 10th Mountain Division.

Pentagon officials said the carrier would be part of a

20,000-member force involved in the invasion. They gave Sept. 21

through the end of November as an invasion window; the Eisenhower

still is scheduled for a regular deployment to the Mediterranean Sea

in October, the Navy said Friday.

The Eisenhower is the first combat ship with women assigned full

time to its crew. More than 100 women are aboard the ship now and as

many as 500 - in jobs including combat pilots, cooks and military

police - were scheduled to be among the 5,500-member crew departing

for the Med.
