Regarding a recent front-page article on Oliver North, I offer the following quote from Secretary of the Navy Instruction 5370.2J.
``. . . (A)ll Department of the Navy (DON) personnel shall -
``Uphold the Constitution, laws and regulations of the United States and never be a party to their evasion.
``Put loyalty to the highest moral principles and to country above loyalty to persons, party, or Government department.
``Avoid action that creates an appearance or using public office for private gain.
``Preserve the public's confidence in the Navy and its personnel by exercising public office as a public trust.''
I and every other member of the Department of the Navy, active-duty and civilian employee alike, must conduct ourselves accordingly.
North violated the instruction: He lied to (not ``misinformed'') Congress; accepted gratuities worth $13,000; and was convicted on three felony violations. He obviously holds himself to a lower standard than the rest of us. I will not vote for him.
