Roy Lenor Carpenter Jr., 73, of the 600 block of Nottingham Road, a retired insurance agent, died Sept. 12, 1994, in his residence.
Mr. Carpenter was born in Rock Hill, S.C., and was a resident of Portsmouth for 60 years. He retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company and was the widower of Edith Bumgarner Carpenter. He was a member and past president of the Cradock Lions Club and a member of T.A. Russell Business Men's Bible Class; Flyers Invitational Golf Association; and the Senior Group at City Park Golf Course. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Eileen Biernot and Cynthia Vanderwege, both of Portsmouth; a son, Roy L. Carpenter III of Portsmouth; two sisters, Naomie Schofield of Bessemer City, N.C., and Helen Brown of Rock Hill, S.C.; a brother, Harold Carpenter of Chula Vista, Calif.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by Bishop Coleman Smith. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery, Bessemer City, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
