Asked last week whether he was going to redshirt offensive lineman Ken McDaniel, who is expected to miss most of the season with a knee injury, Norfolk State coach Darnell Moore said he wasn't sure.
We might need McDaniel for the playoffs, Moore said.
``We could go 9-1 and get in,'' Moore said. ``That sounds far-fetched, but stranger things have happened.''
It still sounds farfetched, even after Saturday's 42-14 win over a good Fayetteville State team.
But the fact is, Norfolk State, 3-7-1 last year, could be better than anyone had a right to expect this season.
How much better?
How about 7-3?
Or 8-2?
It could happen.
In fact, looking at the schedule, you can make a case that it should happen.
Through Saturday, the seven teams remaining on Norfolk State's schedule had a combined record of 4-16.
Toss out Hampton, and it's 1-16.
Next Saturday, the Spartans face winless Elizabeth City State.
Then it's Winston-Salem State (1-2).
After the Hampton game October 15th, the Spartans finish with four teams - Virginia Union, Johnson C. Smith, Lane and Kentucky State - who have yet to win a game this season.
Four of those seven games are at home, including the final two against Lane and Kentucky State, two of the worst Division II teams in the nation last year.
Moore didn't make the schedule. He inherited it, along with the Norfolk State team.
But he could make the most of it. by CNB
