L. Earl Sweet, Jr., 55, of the 3500 block of Wright Road, died Sept. 24, 1994, in Portsmouth.
Mr. Sweet was born in Portsmouth and was a teacher and coach in the Portsmouth city school system. He was a member of Cradock Baptist Church, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Portsmouth Forest (NU)143, Nansemond Masonic Lodge (NU)77, Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies and Nansemond County Deer Club. Many parents, students and fans in the Portsmouth area remember Earl Sweet as ``Coach''. He influenced the lives of many young athletes to achieving higher life goals in sports and in academics. Students in Wilson, Manor and Cradock high schools and in Churchland Junior High were touched by Coach Sweet's skill and dedication to positive achievement and his caring manner.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Anne Ballance Sweet; a son, G. Tully Sweet of Suffolk, Va.; and his mother, Mary Elizabeth Brown Sweet of Portsmouth.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, by Dr. David R. Denny, where Masonic rites will be accorded at the grave. The family will be at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
