ZUNI ANGLER BOATS RECORD 109-POUND WAHOO

One of Virginia's oldest angling records was shattered Sunday when Gene Dawson of Zuni boated a 109-pound wahoo off Virginia Beach. He was about 60 miles offshore aboard the Finatic.

The old record of 97 pounds, held by the late R.R. Matthias of Virginia Beach, had stood since 1975. The state's only older saltwater records are for cod and false albacore, both set in the 1960s.

Bryan Sapp of Hazlehurst, Pa., shattered North Carolina's Spanish mackerel record by boating a 14-pounder off Hatteras on the Miss Lisa. The old record was 13 pounds.

Summerlike weather produced outstanding action off the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina on the first weekend of autumn. Catches included good numbers of wahoo, yellowfin tuna and white marlin, plus some dolphin, sailfish and blue marlin. Inshore, a few big speckled trout were boated. On the Outer Banks, a good run of red drum developed at Cape Point on Hatteras.
