BASNIGHT NAMES 6 TO ROANOKE ISLAND PANEL

State Senate President Marc Basnight of Manteo Monday appointed six Dare County residents to the Roanoke Island Commission.

The commission's establishment was included in the 1994-95 budget bill, and calls for the panel to ``combine various entities in the spirit of cooperation for a cohesive body to protect, preserve and interpret historic and cultural assets of North Carolina.''

Named by Basnight were Bebe Woody, Gus Granitzki, Dawn Evans, Luther Daniels, Keith Fearing and JoAnn Williams, all of Manteo.

``I worked hard to establish this commission because of Roanoke Island's unique historical significance,'' Basnight said.

``As the home of the nation's first English-speaking colony, Roanoke Island is an important element of our state and national heritage,'' Basnight said. ``There is a need for a coordinated effort to preserve and enhance this unique history and we established the commission to achieve that goal.''

The six appointments were the first to be announced. The panel also will include six appointees by the speaker of the House and six by the governor.

The governor, attorney general, secretary of the Department of Cultural Resources, secretary of the Department of Transportation, chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners and the mayor of Manteo will serve as ex-officio members. by CNB
